Diaphragm couplings are precision-engineered devices that consist of single or multiple plates, known as diaphragms, as flexible elements. These couplings play a crucial role in transmitting torque within machinery. The design involves transferring the torque from the outer diameter of a flexible plate to the inner diameter, traversing through a central spool or spacer piece, and subsequently from the inner to the outer diameter.

The key functionality of diaphragm couplings becomes evident when faced with misalignment challenges. The outer diameter of the diaphragm can deflect relative to the inner diameter, accommodating angular, parallel, and substantial axial misalignments. This design flexibility is particularly advantageous in applications requiring high torque and high speed, where the diaphragm efficiently absorbs axial displacements by combining elongations and bending within its profile.
