Labyrinth Seals

Labyrinth Seals

A non-contact labyrinth seal is a mechanical sealing mechanism constructed by stacking metal plates in a configuration that resembles a maze, forming a complex pattern of angles. The complex labyrinth design effectively acts as a barrier, preventing contaminants and splashing liquids from reaching the bearing.

Labyrinth seals typically serve as the initial line of defense, playing a crucial role in averting bearing failures. These specialized seals shield high-precision bearings from issues like corrosion, pollution, and dirt, thus mitigating the risk of unexpected maintenance problems.

In complex sealing systems where a contact seal becomes necessary, implementing non-contact labyrinth seal prior to the contact seal can enhance the overall sealing protection. We recommend this setup, especially in harsh and dusty environments prone to contamination. Often, dust serves as the primary contaminant that infiltrates the rotating application, and applying grease to the labyrinth seal in advance effectively prevents dust from entering the bearing system.
