Variable Speed Drives

Variable Speed Drives

The primary purpose of a variable speed drive (VSD) is to regulate the transfer of energy from the mains to the process. Positioned between the electrical supply and the motor, variable speed drives manage the flow of power from the electrical supply to the motor.

In the drive, the input power is first passed through a rectifier which transforms the incoming AC power into DC power. The DC power is then directed toward the capacitors within the drive to stabilize the electrical waveform and provide a reliable power source for the next stage. Subsequently, the power is transferred from the capacitors to the inverter, which converts the DC power into AC power for the output that is sent to the motor.
